Paradox 9.0: Advanced
Overview:

Students will learn to structure tables properly, use the principles of data normalization and table relationships, enable data-entry accuracy, use queries effectively, and enhance form and report designs to present data effectively.

Prerequisites:

Paradox 9: Introduction or equivalent knowledge.

Target Student:

Students enrolling in this course should have a basic level of understanding of and experience using the Paradox 9 interface, and has used it to design tables, simple queries, forms, and reports.

What's next:

Paradox 9: Introduction is the first course in this series

Performance-Based Objectives:

Lesson objectives help students become comfortable with the course, and also provide a means to evaluate learning. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • Work with keyed tables by structuring them properly and by creating secondary indexes.
  • Organize tables in a database by following data-normalization rules.
  • Classify tables by determining the types of relationships they have, and create relationships between tables by linking and establishing referential integrity.
  • Increase the accuracy of data entry by specifying validity checks and creating lookup tables.
  • Manipulate data in tables by using queries to search for special characters, update multiple records, and link tables.
  • Create custom forms that use memo fields, calculated fields, and combo boxes.
  • Create custom tabular reports by changing a style sheet, defining a table frame object, adding enhancements to improve the report appearance, and using page layout and print settings.
Delivery Method:

Instructor led, group-paced, classroom-delivery learning model with structured hands-on activities.

Hardware/Software Requirements:

To run this course, you will need:
  • A 486 or faster processor with a minimum of 16 MB of RAM. (We recommend a Pentium 133 or faster with 32 MB or more.)
  • 147 MB of free hard-disk space to install Paradox and the default graphics and utilities components, including the Borland Database Engine 5.01 utility.
  • Either a local CD-ROM drive or access to a networked CD-ROM drive for installation purposes.
  • A 3.5" 1.44 MB floppy-disk drive.
  • A VGA or higher resolution monitor.
  • A two-button mouse, an IntelliMouse, or compatible pointing device.
  • An installed printer driver. (Printers are not required; however, each PC must have an installed printer driver to use Print Preview.)
  • Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0.
  • A custom installation of Corel WordPerfect Office 2000 Professional—see the following section, Class Requirements, for additional instructions. This course was developed by using Paradox installed from Corel WordPerfect Office 2000 Professional.
See your reference manual for hardware considerations that apply to your specific hardware setup.
