Internet Explorer 5.0: Introduction

Students will learn how to browse and find information on the Internet.

Course Objectives

You will acquire the necessary skills needed to master searching on the Web.

Prerequisites

Windows NT Workstation 4.0: Orientation, Windows 95: Introduction, or Windows 98: Introduction, or equivalent knowledge.

Target Student

Students enrolling in this course should understand the basic concepts involved in working with a personal computer. For example, students should be familiar with such terms as computer memory, data files, and program files. No prior knowledge of browser software or the Internet is required.

Performance-Based Objectives

Lesson objectives help students become comfortable with the course, and also provide a means to evaluate learning. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Describe the software and hardware required to connect to the Internet, and identify the main components of the Internet Explorer 5.0 window.
Find Web sites that contain useful information, and use Favorites to maintain links to particularly useful sites.
Use Internet Explorer’s Help system to get information about how to browse more efficiently and effectively.
Use Outlook Express to send and receive email, as well as to participate in newsgroup discussions.
Download and unzip zipped files from the Internet, and browse and use files from an FTP site.
Use the Internet Options dialog box to specify a home page, control History, and change settings for temporary Internet files.
Personalize the MSN home page and identify other candidates to be used as a home page.

Hardware/Software Requirements

To run this course

You will need 16 MB of RAM for Windows 95 or Windows 98, and a minimum of 32 MB of RAM for Windows NT Workstation 4.0. You will also need 98 MB of hard disk space for a complete installation of Internet Explorer with Outlook Express. See your reference manual for hardware considerations that apply to your specific hardware setup.
